Heated One Should Last A While – Not Good
Manufacturers advertise the fact that the bed can be heated to over 120°F and, indeed it can be. However, don’t expect this to happen in just any set of weather conditions. When heating a bed, the air is heated and then forced through the tube(s), and not pushed through the molding as the manufacturers claim. A bed can only be heated to about 140°F, and can remain that way during a heavy rain. A damp squall could easily turn the temperature to as high as 200°F, and eventually the surface could reach temperatures over 250°F. If you do manage to get your boat onto the bed, a gentle brushing of the deck and the top surface with a wet rag or sponge could help with absorbing the wetness of the air, but be warned that once the tempos reach these high temperatures their will be no heating from the interior of the boat to withdraw the heat. So once the boat is on the bed, you must guard against water entering the hull or overheating the interior of the boat.
Repairs When Performance Is impaired
Usually a bedding bed’s uneven surface will cause a certain amount of performance problems. If you notice that performance is severely impaired, it may be time to install a new bedding or enhance your boat’s performance with a new bed.
There are a number of products on the market for replacing any type of boat bedding, such as polyester carpet, cotton duck, or synthetic fabrics. Many of them are straightforward replacements of older,model-sized bunk beds. Some of these products will work with older polyester versions of the boat bedding, while others provide only slight expansion.
For the classic boat beds, shrink wrap is the best alternative, because it is durable, waterproof and provides the best performance. Shrink wrap is usually purchased pre-cut in numerous sizes and shapes to fit the boat bed dimensions. Choose the size that almost fits the raft of your boat, but not so small that it makes your boat too tiny.
